Alaska Book Week

Alaska Book Week is an annual celebration highlighting and promoting Alaska’s literary culture. It takes place from October 5th through October 12th and serves as a platform to celebrate Alaskan authors, illustrators, and publishers. The event is designed to raise awareness about the state’s rich literary heritage, showcasing established and emerging voices across Alaska’s diverse communities.

Throughout the week, events are held in various locations, including bookstores, libraries, schools, and online platforms, featuring book readings, author panels, workshops, and book signings. It’s a time when Alaskan stories, ranging from fiction and poetry to history and memoirs, take center stage. The event encourages participation from the literary community and the general public, fostering a sense of connection and pride in Alaska’s storytelling traditions.

The week’s themes often highlight the state’s unique landscapes, history, and cultural narratives, reflecting Alaskans’ spirit and resilience. It’s an opportunity for readers and writers alike to engage with the stories that define life in this vast and rugged region, strengthening the local literary community by providing visibility to creators and encouraging a love for reading.

This celebration highlights the work of Alaskan authors and plays a significant role in cultivating literary talent and fostering collaboration between artists and readers across the state. It’s a vibrant testament to how literature can reflect and shape a place’s identity.

I’m working with the event’s organizers to showcase Author Masterminds members by interviewing the authors. Alaska Book Week will feature the interviews throughout the week.

I invite you to participate in this interview series highlighting Author Masterminds members.

This will be a relaxed conversation exploring your writing process, Alaska’s impact on your storytelling, and future writing plans.

Following are discussion starter questions I may ask during the recorded interview.

  1. How has living in Alaska shaped your storytelling and the themes you explore in your fiction?
  2. What challenges and opportunities do you face as a writer in Alaska, especially compared to other states?
  3. Many authors draw from personal experiences. Are there any specific events or moments that directly inspired one of your stories or characters?
  4. How do you balance the isolation and grandeur of Alaska’s landscapes in your writing?
  5. What role does the sense of community—either within the literary world or local communities—play in your creative process?
  6. Alaska is home to diverse cultures, including Indigenous communities. How do you approach representing different cultural perspectives in your writing?
  7. What advice would you give to emerging authors in Alaska who may be struggling to find their voice or place in the broader literary world?
  8. Can you share your writing routine or any unique methods you use to stay productive, especially in Alaska’s long winters or the midnight summer sun?
  9. Which Alaskan authors or stories have inspired or influenced your writing, and what books do you recommend for those new to Alaskan literature?
  10. Looking to the future, are there any themes or stories you haven’t explored yet but hope to tackle in your upcoming projects?

Kindly let me know if you’d like to participate, and we’ll set a date and time for the interview.

  • My Memoir Out of the Dark was reviewed by Nancy Lord in ADN. The story starts with a tragedy that Leads to a journey 8000 miles across Canada from NYto Alaska and ends in a love story and a new beginning in a cabin off the road system. 50 5 star reviews on Amazon speak to why readers like it

  • I would be interested in an interview; I find many of your questions very relevant to my writing. I have (self) published just one book: Iditarod Improbable: Adventure Racing on Alaska’s Iditarod Trail. It’s a historical fiction novel, based loosely on my racing and cycle touring experiences on the Iditarod Trail at the turn of the last century. lt also chronicles the Alaskan origins of the modern fat-tired bicycle, of which I was one of the developers, and the struggles of introducing a new product into a skeptical marketplace. Thank you for the opportunity.
