“To produce a mighty book, you must choose a mighty theme.” These profound words by Herman Melville encapsulate the essence of his view on the power of writing. In this blog post, we embark on a journey to explore the life and legacy of this literary luminary, whose contributions to literature and society continue to resonate today.
In the Shadow of Mighty Themes
Herman Melville, a name etched in the annals of literary history, was born in 1819 in the bustling heart of New York City. But his life was far from ordinary, marked by hardships and an unyielding passion for the written word. At the core of Melville’s philosophy lay the belief that the magnitude of the theme chosen could dictate the impact of one’s writing on the world.
A Sailor’s Odyssey
Melville’s early life was a tale of adversity. Losing his father at a tender age, he faced financial struggles that would eventually lead him on a life-altering path. At 18, he embarked on a maritime adventure, seeking adventure and financial stability. These long voyages across the vast Pacific Ocean would become the crucible in which his literary genius was forged. Here, he would gather the raw materials for one of his most celebrated works, Moby-Dick.
Life at sea was far from romantic; it was a harsh and relentless existence. Yet, during these trials and tribulations, Melville’s storytelling skills were honed. The sea, his muse, and tormentor, provided the backdrop for his vivid narratives. It taught him the art of perseverance in the face of adversity, a lesson that would resonate throughout his literary career.
The Friendships That Shaped a Genius
In a different phase of his life, Melville found himself in the midst of a unique and influential relationship. His friendship with Nathaniel Hawthorne, another revered author of the time, would prove pivotal. The two authors struck up a close bond during their time in the Berkshires, where they engaged in deep conversations about literature, philosophy, and the profound themes that would eventually find their way into Melville’s works.
Hawthorne’s influence on Melville cannot be overstated. During this period, Melville penned Moby-Dick, a literary masterpiece that delves into themes of obsession, revenge, and the relentless pursuit of a formidable adversary. The relationship between Melville and Hawthorne serves as a testament to the power of intellectual companionship and how it can shape one’s creative vision.
The Literary Legacy
Herman Melville’s literary legacy extends far beyond the pages of his novels. His works, including Moby-Dick, Billy Budd, and Bartleby, the Scrivener, have left an indelible mark on society. Moby-Dick, in particular, symbolizes American literature’s power to grapple with profound themes. Its exploration of the human psyche and the relentless pursuit of an elusive goal have resonated with readers for generations.
Moreover, Melville’s critique of societal norms and institutions, as seen in Bartleby, the Scrivener, challenged prevailing ideas about conformity and the dehumanizing nature of modern work. These themes continue to be relevant in contemporary discussions on labor and individuality.
The Transformative Power of Writing
In conclusion, Herman Melville’s enduring legacy as a writer is a testament to the transformative power of literature. His life was marked by struggles and challenges, which he channeled into his work, creating profound narratives that resonate with readers today. His friendship with Nathaniel Hawthorne exemplifies the importance of intellectual companionship in shaping one’s creative vision. Through his exploration of timeless themes, Melville’s impact on society has influenced not only literature but also societal norms and perceptions.
Aspiring writers should take inspiration from Melville’s journey. Writing offers a powerful means of expression and reflection in a world filled with challenges and uncertainties. Melville’s words remind us that by choosing mighty themes and persevering in our craft, we, too, can make a lasting impact on the world.
Embrace the Power of Writing
I encourage you to delve into the works of Herman Melville, explore the depths of his narratives, and harness the power of writing to make a difference in your own life and society at large. As you embark on your literary journey, remember that the choice of a mighty theme and the resilience to face life’s storms can transform your words into a force of lasting impact.

We hear authors complain about all the personal stuff on Facebook. Most of these complaints are because the author doesn’t understand the difference difference between a Facebook profile and a Facebook page. Simply put, a profile is for personal things for friends and family; a page is for business. If your book is just a hobby, then it’s fine to have only a Facebook profile and make your posts for friends and family; however, if you’re serious about your writing, and it’s a business with you, or you want it to be business, then you need a Facebook page as an author. It’s simple to tell if it’s a page or a profile. A profile shows how many friends and a page shows how many likes. Here’s a link <> to a straight forward description on how to set up your author Facebook page.
