In the world of literature and publishing, where words are more than just ink on paper; they are vessels carrying ideas, emotions, and stories, ethical integrity should be the North Star guiding those who navigate this intricate landscape. In this blog post, we delve into the inspiring story of Publication Consultants, a shining example of ethical excellence in publishing, and their recent accolade – the Better Business Bureau’s Torch Award for Ethics.
A Journey Beyond Publishing
Publication Consultants, a modest yet remarkable publishing house based in Anchorage, Alaska, has been dedicated to bringing authors’ works to life since their inception in 1978. What sets them apart is that they don’t just see themselves as publishers; they wear the hats of writers. This dual perspective offers them a unique insight into the challenges that authors face on their creative journeys.
The Torch of Ethical Excellence
The Better Business Bureau’s Torch Award for Ethics is no ordinary accolade. It’s a prestigious honor bestowed upon businesses and organizations that consistently uphold the highest ethical standards in their operations. It goes beyond profit margins and dives deep into the heart of an organization, assessing its integrity, transparency, and fairness in all its interactions.
In 2023, Publication Consultants was honored with the Small Business of the Year title at the Torch Awards for Alaska. This recognition was no mere formality; it required demonstrating a high personal character and an unwavering commitment to ethical business practices. It demanded the building of trust not just with customers but with the entire community.
Evan and Lois Swensen: The Guardians of Ethical Publishing
Evan and Lois Swensen, the visionary leaders behind Publication Consultants, have been the torchbearers of this commitment to integrity and ethics. Evan Swensen, in his reflection on the essence of their business, emphasized that publishing with integrity and character isn’t just a strategy; it’s their very identity.
This commitment isn’t just lip service; it’s embedded in their daily operations and interactions. Moreover, it extends beyond the confines of their office and permeates the larger community they serve. Publication Consultants isn’t just a business; it’s a living testament to the belief that ethical business practices can lead to not only success but also a positive impact on the community.
Inspiring Others to Follow Suit
Tyler Andrew, President and CEO of BBB Great West + Pacific, rightfully acknowledged that award winners like Publication Consultants are setting the standard for what it means to be an exemplary and ethical business. Such recognition serves as an inspiration for others to follow suit to build an ethical marketplace where trust is the cornerstone of every transaction.
The Voice of Authors
What truly sets Publication Consultants apart is the resounding testimony of their authors, the true beneficiaries of their ethical publishing practices. These are the voices of authors who have entrusted their dreams and creations to this honest publisher.
– Robin Barefield, who has had six books published by Publication Consultants, speaks of their honesty, support, and helpfulness.
– Rebecca Wetzler appreciates their ethical stance and high standards for quality and content.
– Irene Petteice sums it up succinctly, “You know you can trust them.”
– Mary Ann Poll acknowledges their dedication to ethics and professionalism, which stands out in the industry.
– Rick Mystrom, with over 50 years of business experience, places Evan Swensen among the best regarding honesty and ethics.
– Sarkis Atamian affirmed their integrity as a first-class operation.
– Glen Guy (Dusty Sourdough) believes there isn’t a better, more honest publisher anywhere.
– Elverda Lincoln appreciates their expertise and encouragement in getting her book published.
In Conclusion
In a world where words hold immense power, where stories shape our understanding of the human experience, it is heartening to know that there are publishers like Publication Consultants who are not just in the business of books but in the business of trust, integrity, and ethical excellence.
The Torch Award for Ethics is not just a recognition; it’s a reminder that in the world of publishing, as in life, honesty and ethics are the true cornerstones of lasting success. Publication Consultants serves as an illuminating example of how ethical publishing practices can enrich not only the literary world but also the lives of authors and the broader community. They are not just publishers; they are honest stewards of the written word.

We hear authors complain about all the personal stuff on Facebook. Most of these complaints are because the author doesn’t understand the difference difference between a Facebook profile and a Facebook page. Simply put, a profile is for personal things for friends and family; a page is for business. If your book is just a hobby, then it’s fine to have only a Facebook profile and make your posts for friends and family; however, if you’re serious about your writing, and it’s a business with you, or you want it to be business, then you need a Facebook page as an author. It’s simple to tell if it’s a page or a profile. A profile shows how many friends and a page shows how many likes. Here’s a link <> to a straight forward description on how to set up your author Facebook page.
