There’s a quiet moment every author faces after typing “The End.” It’s that mix of pride and vulnerability—the sense you’ve created something meaningful, yet fragile. I’ve felt it myself, and I’ve seen it countless times in authors I’ve helped publish. The questions come fast: “Can someone steal my book?” “Do I need to copyright it?” “How do I know who to trust?”
The truth is, scams in publishing have never been more sophisticated—or more heartbreaking. Unscrupulous companies prey on that moment of vulnerability. They promise movie deals, international distribution, or “guaranteed bestseller” status. They use the language of legitimacy, but their goal isn’t to publish your book—it’s to profit from your dream.
I once spoke with an author who paid thousands to a so-called “literary marketing service.” They promised exposure to “major film producers.” What she received was a cheaply printed brochure and silence. Her words, her story—something she’d poured years into—became a paycheck for someone else. That’s the quiet theft authors rarely see coming.
Here’s what I tell every writer:
- You already own your copyright the moment your words are written. Registration with the U.S. Copyright Office adds legal strength—it’s like locking your front door instead of leaving it open—but the ownership begins with creation.
- Be wary of anyone who contacts you first. Reputable publishers, agents, and producers rarely cold-call or email unsolicited.
- Watch for inflated promises. Phrases like “guaranteed success,” “massive distribution,” or “instant royalties” are red flags.
- Do your homework. Check reviews, look up company names with “complaints” or “scam” in your search, and talk to other authors before signing anything.
- Keep your publishing rights clear. Read contracts carefully. If the language confuses you, pause and seek a second opinion before you sign.
At Publication Consultants, we built our foundation on transparency. We believe authors deserve partners, not predators. Every author keeps full copyright, and every step—from manuscript to finished book—is open, accountable, and documented.
If you’ve ever doubted your footing in this confusing landscape, remember this: your words are your property, and your signature is your safeguard. Never rush it. Never let flattery or fear pressure you into a bad decision.
I’ve been in this business long enough to know one thing for certain—integrity still matters. The honest path may not promise overnight fame, but it promises peace of mind. And for authors who’ve worked too hard to give away their power, peace of mind is worth more than any false promise.
Soon, we’ll talk more about the power authors hold—not just to protect their work, but to shape the world through it.
Because authors matter. Words matter. And when we guard them well, they can change lives.
These reflections are inspired by The Power of Authors: A Rallying Cry for Today’s Writers to Recognize Their Power, Rise to Their Calling, and Write with Moral Conviction. The book is available now on Amazon: http://bit.ly/3K6o8AM.

Next week, we’ll look at how authors can protect their work—legally, ethically, and creatively—while keeping their focus where it belongs: on writing stories worth remembering.

We hear authors complain about all the personal stuff on Facebook. Most of these complaints are because the author doesn’t understand the difference difference between a Facebook profile and a Facebook page. Simply put, a profile is for personal things for friends and family; a page is for business. If your book is just a hobby, then it’s fine to have only a Facebook profile and make your posts for friends and family; however, if you’re serious about your writing, and it’s a business with you, or you want it to be business, then you need a Facebook page as an author. It’s simple to tell if it’s a page or a profile. A profile shows how many friends and a page shows how many likes. Here’s a link <> to a straight forward description on how to set up your author Facebook page.
