There’s always the first person an author needs to sell their first book to.
This is the first step an author makes with a new book—and they will make it every time.
But most authors don’t realize that it starts inside the writer.
The first person you must sell the story to is yourself. You heard me correctly.
I was a salesman for many years, and if I didn’t believe in the products I had to sell, I could not accept the job of selling them.
You can see how important it is to realize you are the first person you sell your book to. Why would you even write it if you were not sure it was of any value?
The first person you sell your book to is always yourself.
Next, you sell the book to your writer’s group, friends, and family who read the first drafts.
You have to sell your book to the publisher and an agent before that if you decide to get an agent. Again—you must believe in your work to have the confidence to sell it to anyone.
You must make each of these folks aware of the book’s value to them personally, or they will not want to spend their time on it.
And of course, you must sell your book to your readers—each of them, one at a time.
Even if you take out a big ad.
Even if you’re on the radio or TV or internet.
Each reader makes their own decisions about what to buy to read.
But you start with yourself.
When you realize that books are all about selling, step-by-step and person-by-person, you will understand something significant about the book business.

We hear authors complain about all the personal stuff on Facebook. Most of these complaints are because the author doesn’t understand the difference difference between a Facebook profile and a Facebook page. Simply put, a profile is for personal things for friends and family; a page is for business. If your book is just a hobby, then it’s fine to have only a Facebook profile and make your posts for friends and family; however, if you’re serious about your writing, and it’s a business with you, or you want it to be business, then you need a Facebook page as an author. It’s simple to tell if it’s a page or a profile. A profile shows how many friends and a page shows how many likes. Here’s a link <> to a straight forward description on how to set up your author Facebook page.
