An e-book is the electronic version of a book, whether or not it is ever published in what we now call hardcopy.
This is good news and bad news for authors.
The good news is that about 20% of Americans have read an e-book in the past year, and “The average reader of e-books claims to have read 24 books in the last year, compared with an average of 15 books read by those who read only print,” this from Malcolm Jones in the Daily Beast, reporting on a Pew Research Center survey released April 2012.
The bad news is that nowadays, to reach different groups of readers, more than one book format is required. This does mean more expense, time, and thought. You must also learn to sell ebooks, audio books etc.
But it all starts with writing a good book. Getting it edited. Planning how to market it. An e-book is a real book, and we publish it with the same attention to detail that your paperback or hardback would get.
As a rule, Publication Consultants expects the e-book version of your work to be published at the same time as your paperback or hardback. We know this is an important step in the success of your book.
We handle the ISBNs and copyright filings for you. Each format of a book gets its own ISBN and copyright. We also obtain the Library of Congress numbers and UPC codes for your books, as these are required to sell your work to libraries, newsstands, on the Internet, etc.
Having a publisher do these steps takes a burden off the author; one of many good reasons to work with us. We’re used to all this, and do it all the time.
We can help you publish and sell ebooks.
By the way, unless we buy your work outright, the copyrights will belong to you, or your designated group or organization, as specified in the publishing contract.
Some authors decide to publish only in the e-book format. This may be based on their target market. If an author who is with us decides to go this route, we still recommend a certain number of hardcopy books be printed, to send to reviewers. At this point in time, most reviewers prefer to read hardcopy.
Our free e-book, Bringing Your Book to Market, can answer some of your questions. If you haven’t already signed up for it, kindly do so and we will get the download to you directly.
Keep in touch.
