Yet, Flaubert’s insights into writing extend beyond this one statement. For Flaubert, writing was a pursuit of perfection through exactness, patience, and the ruthless elimination of anything that didn’t serve the story.

Flaubert, often described as an obsessive perfectionist, wrote slowly and painstakingly. He would spend entire days crafting a single paragraph, striving to find the exact word to convey his meaning perfectly. He believed that le mot juste—the “right word”—was the foundation of great writing. He once said, “It is easy to be brilliant. This dedication to authenticity, even at the risk of alienating readers or critics, was central to Flaubert’s writing philosophy.

In today’s world, where writers may feel pressure to conform to trends or produce content that fits neatly into genre categories, Flaubert’s words are a powerful reminder to stay true to your voice. According to Flaubert, writing is not about chasing success but expressing the truth as you see it in the most precise and disciplined way possible.

Ultimately, Flaubert’s advice to writers—focus on precision, patience, and truth—remains timeless. His methodical, disciplined approach may seem rigid at first. Still, it allows for a depth of creativity and originality that can only come from a fully committed writer.
