Anna Sewell ‘s Black Beauty, published in 1877 and set in Victorian London, is one of the best-selling and most widely read books of all time. Told by the horse himself, it is the fascinating story of the life of a horse more than a hundred years ago, when horses were a part of everyone’s life. Black Beauty’s early life was happy; however, he experiences the bitterness of cruel grooms and indifferent masters as he goes from the country to London and back again. Black Beauty is the most famous horse story ever written.

The collection includes What Ginger Told Black Beauty by Anna Sewell. Ginger is a beautiful horse, a tall chestnut with a long neck and a white stripe on her face. But Beauty and Ginger don’t really start out on the right foot. In direct contrast to Beauty, who’s gentle, willing, and eager to please, Ginger is feisty, quick-tempered, and easily irritated.

Rounding off the collection are nearly 100 mostly animal stories by Harriet Beecher Stowe, Carl Ewald, Lillian M. Gash, and Beatrix Potter.
