Don’t Force It

A young fellow came into my store Monday with a bolt he had stripped clean of its threads, and set it on my counter as if it had personally wronged him.

It was loose, he said. It kept working loose. So, he tightened it. And it was still loose, so he tightened it more. And more. At some point, the threads inside gave up entirely and turned to smooth metal, and now the bolt spins forever and holds nothing at all. He wanted a new one. And he was going to do the exact same thing to the new one. I could see it plain in his eyes.

I stopped him, gently, and told him the truest thing I know about a bolt, which turns out to be one of the truest things I know about nearly anything. The answer to loose is not always tighter. Sometimes tighter is the whole entire problem.

Let me tell you about a tool most people have never once heard of, though it quietly holds the modern world together.

For most of human history, tightening a bolt was a matter of feel. A man leaned on his wrench, and grunted, and stopped when it seemed about right, and every man’s about right was different. Some had strong wrists and cranked everything to the breaking point. Some were gentle and left it all loose. Nobody could measure it. As one old account puts it, tight enough was not a measurement. It was a gamble. And the gamble cost. Too loose, and the thing worked apart and leaked and failed. Too tight, and you stripped the threads, or cracked the casting, or snapped the bolt clean in two.

Then, in 1918, a foreman at the New York City Water Department named Conrad Bahr got sick to death of ruined water mains, and he built the first torque wrench. And a torque wrench is a strange, humble little thing. Its entire job, the only thing it does, is to find the exact right amount of force and tell you, with a click, to stop. Not more. Not less. Right there. Stop.

Here is the part which has stayed with me for years. They have tested this. They have taken experienced mechanics, men who have tightened bolts their whole lives and would swear they can feel the right tension in their own two hands, and measured them against the tool. And the men are almost always wrong. Almost always. Because more force always feels like more strength. It feels like doing a better, more thorough job. And it simply is not. Past a certain point, every ounce of extra force you put into a thing is not making it tighter. It is making it weaker, right up until it breaks.

I think a great deal on this, standing where I stand, because it is not only true of bolts.

We are a people who believe in force. When a thing will not hold, we bear down harder. When a plan is not working, we push. The child who will not become the picture we had, we press. When marriage comes apart, we grip it tighter, certain more effort, more insistence, more force is the answer. And sometimes it is. But past the right point, it is the very same as the bolt. You are not fastening anything. You are stripping the threads. And a thing with stripped threads holds nothing at all, no matter how hard you crank it, ever again.

There is a right tension for things. For a bolt, for a person, for a hope. And the hardest, humblest skill in the world may be learning to feel where it is, and then, against everything in you screaming to push harder, to stop.

Some things you cannot force. A change of heart. A person coming home. You can only set the conditions, and invite, and wait. You cannot torque a soul. Bear down on it, and you will only strip the very threads you were trying to save.

Find the right tension. And then, my friends, set down the wrench.

You will badly want to give it one more turn. Do not.
