Give Them a Reason to Stay

For every post asking readers to buy the book, share three giving them a reason to stay.

Think about the authors you follow on social media. Not as a publisher. As a reader.

Some of them post interesting things — a passage from the manuscript in progress, the story behind a character, a photograph from the place where the book is set, a thought connecting the book’s subject to something in the news. You look forward to their posts. When they mention the book is on sale or a new one is coming, you pay attention because they have earned it.

Others post the same thing every week. “Buy my book.” A link. A cover image. Another link. Another cover image.

Which author would you rather follow?

The Rule of Three

For every post promoting the book — a buy link, a sale announcement, a signing invitation — share three giving the reader something worth receiving. A passage from the book. The research behind a scene. A photograph from the setting. A question inviting conversation. The story of how you came to write it. A recommendation for another author’s book you admire.

Three is not a researched optimum. It is not an algorithm. It is a reminder: give readers considerably more reasons to stay than reasons to buy. The number is less important than the principle — the reader followed you because they found you interesting. Keep being interesting. The promotion works because it arrives surrounded by content the reader already values.

You Are Already Interesting

Here is something most authors do not believe: someone who enjoyed your book is interested in the person who wrote it. They want more of you, not more advertisements. They want the behind-the-scenes. The personal connection. The sense they are following a real person who happens to write books, not a marketing account pretending to be a person.

The value posts are not obligations. They are invitations to share the parts of your life and work your readers are already curious about. The research trip. The morning writing routine. The book you are reading. The view from your desk. The question a reader asked at a signing and the answer you gave.

Imagine Robin Barefield posting a photograph of sunrise over the water at her remote Kodiak lodge. No Amazon link. No website link. Just: “This is what greeted us this morning.”

It didn’t drive traffic. It didn’t collect an email address. It didn’t ask anyone to buy anything. But for a reader who follows Robin because her books come from a world they want to glimpse, the post gave them exactly what they came for. They are seeing the place where the stories come from. The relationship is not leading somewhere. The relationship is somewhere.

The Porch

An author stands at the front door of their house. If every time a neighbor walks past, the author shouts “Buy my book!” eventually people cross the street.

But imagine the author sitting on the porch. Talking about something discovered during research. Showing the view. Mentioning a book they just read. Telling the story behind a character. Answering someone’s question. And occasionally saying, “By the way, the new book comes out Tuesday.”

The book announcement belongs because the author already belongs.

Social media works the same way. The author who gives readers a reason to stay makes the occasional invitation to buy feel like part of the relationship rather than the purpose of it.

Start this week. Before the next time you post about the book, share three things your readers would find interesting even if the book did not exist. The balance will feel strange at first. It will feel like you are not marketing enough.

You are sharing your world with readers because your world is worth sharing. When it’s time to mention the book, the book already has a place in the conversation.

If this idea resonates with you, you will find the same philosophy throughout The Power of Authors by Evan and Lois Swensen, where the relationship between author and reader is treated as the foundation of everything worth building.
