Rebecca Goodrich receives First Place for Creative Verse

Rebecca Goodrich was at the Book Bonanza in the Cottonwood Mall in Wasilla at about the turn of the last decade. We talked and it went from there. And we’re most appreciative for her coming over and meeting us. [She was also a judge at the literary contest, and doing a Wall of Words project in another part of the mall with some teens.]

She talked me into going to visit her writers group to talk about publishing and marketing their books. That might have been around 2003.

After that, we worked together to put on some book marketing workshops. In the first workshop, she ensured we served a most appetizing chocolate cake, which was a big hit with all the attendees.

Rebecca has visited my office many times over the years, to discuss book publishing and how to improve it, how to help published authors, and those just starting out as writers. We didn’t and we don’t always agree, but we always enjoy our visits.

In addition to her business of editing, book consulting, and marketing, Rebecca writes a book review column as a donation to the literary community here, as well as giving of her time to help writers of all ages, individually, and in groups. We can rely on her to volunteer for the Young Writers Conference in Palmer, Alaska every year.

What with all the things she does, some people are surprised to find out that she’s also a creative writer.

This year, she received first place for a poem that was published in Cirque Literary Journal, in December 2012. The award was given by the National Federation of Press Women, which judged from the first place winners of each state. The poem is called “John Phillip Santos: Cosmic Green Card” and you can see it online at cirquejournal.com. Look for Vol. 4, No. 1, with the birch trees on the cover.

There was no money with this award, and she didn’t cure cancer, but there was the satisfaction of the recognition of creative talent, and we enjoyed Rebecca’s achievement almost as much as she did.
