The Years No One Sees
By Dan Larson

A man came to see me this week, tired in a way sleep does not fix. For three years he has written his son a letter every month, and for three years the letters have gone unanswered. He has stopped expecting a reply and has not stopped writing. He wanted to know, sitting across from me, whether he is a fool to keep on. I gave him some answer. It wasn’t enough, and I knew it as I said it. Later I read about a man in Scotland, and I wished I had waited and told him this instead.

His name is Robert Kindness, Bob to everyone, and he lives on Loch Carron, in the Scottish Highlands. Thirty years ago the salmon had all but vanished from his river. Bob built a small hatchery on a nearby estate and began, quietly, to put the fish back. Year after year he raised the young salmon and let them go, as many as 150,000 in a single year, and kept careful record of each generation. For most of those years there was little to show. He was releasing fish into a river still too empty to prove him right, with no way to know whether any of it was working.

And then, slowly, the catches began to climb. The 10-year average is back to 246, from about 150 before he began. This past June the King gave him a small medal, an MBE, for a program most people will never hear of. Even now his records are being studied to learn whether this kind of rescue truly works. The man has given 30 years to a question still being answered.

I did not tell the man across from me to keep on. Who am I to promise him a reply will come; it may not. What I keep thinking is this: I answered him too quickly. He had not come for a verdict on whether his letters work. He came not to be alone in the not-knowing, and I handed him a tidy sentence instead of an hour. I wrote Bob Kindness’s name in my notebook. The next time he sits down, I will not have an answer for him. I will have a chair, and the long evening, and the name of a man who let the fish go into an empty river for 30 years without proof, and did not call it wasted.

What good, slow work are you doing with nothing yet to show for it? Tell us. Write to us. If we have gotten a fact wrong, tell us and we will correct it.

Cedar Valley News is fiction — its columnists and townspeople are invented, including Dan Larson and the person in his office, though the public facts it cites are real and sourced. Robert “Bob” Kindness is real. At Loch Carron in the Scottish Highlands, he spent roughly 30 years rebuilding the collapsed Atlantic salmon run of the River Carron, raising young fish at a hatchery he built on the Attadale Estate and returning as many as 150,000 a year; the 10-year average rod catch has risen to 246, from about 150 before the programme. In June 2026 he was appointed MBE in the King’s Birthday Honours “for services to the River Carron Salmon Stock Restoration Programme.” The records, gathered by the River Carron Conservation Association and studied with UHI Inverness, now inform a wider investigation into conservation stocking.
