Social Media/Social Networking—Must I?

Social media—newsletters, blogs, webinars, articles. Each of these is a medium through which you send messages about yourself and your books.

Social networking. Social media. Aren’t they the same thing? Fauzia Burke, book marketing consultant, quoted in a recent Book Business magazine, says, “The role of social media is to entertain, educate, and delight your readers. The role of social networking is to find and engage with your audience and fans.”

Burke says social media and social networking is a long-term investment, and we concur. Our experience was that we got little action—few hits—on our blog and other social networks for several months. But we kept on with our blogs, tweets, and Facebooking, and things started to take shape, and have been improving ever since.

When Publication Consultants decided to invest in social media, we went for the whole shebang—Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, and blogs. We have added webinars. This works for us.

But must you put time into every social networking fad that comes along? John Parsons, author of the article, the Social Publisher, assembled a chart to help authors focus on the social mediums most liable to be helpful to them. For instance, Self-help and Women’s issues genres do well on Facebook, while Business is better on Twitter and LinkedIn.

You can see that chart, and the entire article, here: http://www.bookbusinessmag.com/article/social-marketing-authors-publishers/2.

We hope that this information helps you streamline and focus your efforts to connect and network.
