Facebook for the Author

The question is not Page or Profile. The question is: where on Facebook do your readers expect to find you?

You will hear this advice: create a Facebook Page for your book.

It is not wrong. But it is no longer the only answer — and for some authors, it may not be the best one. Facebook has changed considerably, and an author choosing where to build a presence in 2026 has options the old advice does not cover.

Before setting up anything new, ask three questions.

Where Are Your Readers Already Finding You?

If readers are already finding you through your personal profile — if friends, family, and community members are the core of your audience — you may not need a separate Page at all.

Facebook now offers Professional Mode for personal profiles. Turning it on adds public followers, analytics, and creator tools directly to the profile you already have. Anyone can follow you without sending a friend request. You keep your friends, your posts, and your name. Facebook adds a professional layer on top.

For many authors — especially those whose readers come from their existing community rather than a national audience — Professional Mode may be the simplest and most effective choice. The readers are already there. The profile is already active.

Do You Need a Distinct Professional Presence?

A Facebook Page is a separate professional address. Anyone can follow it. It appears in search results. It displays the book, the bio, the website link, events, and contact information. It provides analytics and is the place where paid promotions run.

A Page makes sense when the author wants a public presence entirely separate from the personal profile — a storefront distinct from the home. It is especially useful for authors building a presence beyond their personal community, because the Page can be linked from the website, included in the media kit, and shared without exposing the personal profile.

But a Page built and left empty is worse than no Page at all. If an author creates a Page because someone said authors are supposed to have one, posts to it for a month, and then stops, the Page becomes an outdated picture of the author.

Build a Page only if you intend to keep it current. The standard from campaign 131 applies: accurate, present, and recognizable.

Is There Something for Readers to Gather Around?

A Facebook Group is a community space — a place where readers talk to each other, not just to the author.

But a Group should not exist so the author has another place to promote the book. A Group should exist because the people in it have a reason to talk even when the author is not in the room.

Alaska history. Wildlife photography. Mystery fiction. Homesteading. Military memoir. Grief and recovery. If the book’s subject connects to a community of shared interest, a Group gives the readers a table to gather around. The author’s role is host, not advertiser.

If there is no natural community around the book’s subject — if the Group would be a space for one author talking to a handful of followers — skip it. Not every book needs a Group. Every book needs a findable author.

The Principle Underneath

Facebook offers authors three kinds of space. The profile is the person. The Page is the sign on the house. The Group is the gathering around the table. Each serves a different purpose. Not every author needs all three.

The platform will change again. It always does. What will not change is the principle: go where your readers are, give them a reason to stay, and make it easy for them to find you when they come looking.

If this idea resonates with you, you will find the same philosophy throughout The Power of Authors by Evan and Lois Swensen, where reaching the reader always begins with understanding where the reader already is.
