Permission Not to Be There

Not every platform is for every author. Knowing where you do not belong is as valuable as knowing where you do.

Every conference panel, every marketing article, every social media expert adds another item to the author’s list of things they should be doing. The list grows. The author’s time does not.

This campaign is about one item on the list — TikTok — but it is really about something larger. It is about asking a question before joining any platform, attending any workshop, or following any piece of advice:

What is this for?

The Case of BookTok

TikTok has a community of readers and creators called BookTok. It is large, enthusiastic, and capable of drawing enormous attention to a book. Novels have reached bestseller lists after gaining traction there. Backlist titles have found new audiences years after publication.

None of this means it is the right platform for you.

An author considering any new platform deserves an honest answer, not a sales pitch. BookTok has worked well for some books and some authors. The question is whether it works for yours — and only you can answer it.

Before spending time learning a new platform, ask three questions.

First: Are the readers I am trying to reach gathering there? Not readers in general — the specific readers whose interests, questions, and experiences connect to the book you wrote. If your book is a memoir about commercial fishing, a history of your community, or stories from a life lived in Alaska, find out where people interested in those subjects already gather. It may be Facebook. It may be Goodreads. It may be a library event or local newspaper. It may even be TikTok. Find out before investing your time.

Second: Does this way of communicating fit me and my book? TikTok is built on short video. Some authors are natural on camera. Others are not, and there is no shame in it. An author who writes beautifully but freezes on video is not failing. The author is better suited to a written platform.

Third: Do I have something worthwhile to contribute there? Before posting, spend time watching. Notice what people are talking about, how books enter the conversation, and whether you can imagine contributing something natural in the form. If the answer is no, the platform is not for you right now — and a considered no is a perfectly good answer.

What This Is Really About

The three questions above are not really about TikTok. They apply to every platform, every marketing tactic, and every piece of advice an author receives.

If the answer to “Why should I be on TikTok?” is “Because someone told me I should,” the answer is not strong enough.

The same is true of Instagram, LinkedIn, a podcast, a newsletter, or any other channel. The previous campaigns in this series asked specific questions about each one:

Campaign 131 asked: What does a reader find when they search for you?

Campaign 136 asked: Where on Facebook do your readers expect to find you?

Campaign 138 asked: What conversation did your book come from?

Every one of those questions begins with purpose. None of them begins with obligation.

Permission

An author who examines TikTok honestly and decides it does not serve the book is not behind. The author has done something most marketing advice never encourages — made a purposeful decision about where to spend limited time.

One platform where you have something worth saying may serve you better than five where you have nothing to offer but a book title.

You do not have to be everywhere.

You have to be somewhere it matters — to your readers and to you.

If this idea resonates with you, you will find the same philosophy throughout The Power of Authors by Evan and Lois Swensen — a book about why authors write and why what they write matters.

The Power of Authors is available from Amazon or your favorite bookseller: evanswensen.com. If you’d like an autographed copy, visit the same website and order directly.
