The Bet in Your Pocket
By Dan Larson

A man in my stake came to see me about his marriage. His wife had gone quiet on him, and he could not say when.

We talked for most of an hour before he took out his phone. It had an account on it she didn’t know about. It began during a football game, a bet he could place without leaving his chair, and grew its own hour of the night after she slept. He had never driven to a casino. He had only stopped being in the house he was sitting in.

At General Conference last weekend, President Christofferson said a thing I wrote in my margin: the whole business is built on its customers losing money. I thought of the man across from me. He had not gone looking for a casino. One had found its way into his pocket, and it never closed.

I have framed houses most of my life. You raise a wall where none was, and a family sleeps behind it for 50 years. Honest work leaves something standing. A wager leaves no house standing. For the house to win, you have to lose, and when the night is over nothing has been made.

I asked if his wife knew. He shook his head. I asked what he feared, and after a while he said he was afraid she would go. I did not tell him she would stay. I do not know. I told him the quiet had a cause and a name, and no marriage warms again until the thing between two people is laid on the table.

A man can sit 20 feet from everyone he loves and still be entirely gone from the house.

I did not write this to scold him. He made his choices, and he was up against people far cleverer about his attention than he was ever asked to be. Watch the people you love for the quiet signs. And if the one caught is you, hear me: there is no shame to carry alone, and you can call 1-800-GAMBLER, any hour.

He is doing the hard work now. What his wife will do is hers to decide. I tell you because someone you know is a few taps into it tonight and has told no one. Be the one he can tell. The house is built to win. It is not built to love you. The people at your table are.

Has this quiet thing reached your house, or a house you love, and what, if anything, helped? Write to us. If we have gotten a fact wrong, tell us and we will correct it.

Written by Evan Swensen, Publisher, with Claude Marshall, AI Developmental Editor. A reflection, not a report. At the October 2026 general conference of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, President D. Todd Christofferson, in a talk titled “O Be Wise,” warned the gambling industry’s business is built on its customers losing money.
