The Goodreads Author Profile

Your book may already have a home on Goodreads. Have you looked to see what your readers find there?

Robin Barefield lives in the wilderness on Kodiak Island, where she and her husband own a remote lodge. She wrote her first novel, Murder Over Kodiak, powered by a generator, miles from the nearest road. No MFA. No publishing connections. No high-speed internet.

Search for Robin Barefield on Goodreads today and you find an author with multiple books listed, reviews from readers, a bio matching her website and Amazon page, and links connecting her to the broader reading community. A reader in New York or London or Anchorage can type her name and discover her entire catalog in seconds.

Robin built this from one of the most remote places an author could live. She built it by claiming her profile and keeping it current. The distance between a wilderness lodge on Kodiak and a reader’s nightstand collapsed because she showed up on the platform where readers gather.

What Goodreads Is

Goodreads is a reading community owned by Amazon. Readers use it to track what they have read, rate and review books, discover new titles, and follow authors whose work interests them.

Your book may already be in the Goodreads database even if you have never created an account or claimed your author profile. But an unclaimed listing is a shell — it may show the title and cover, but it carries no bio, no photograph, and no connection to you as a reachable author.

Claiming your Author Profile through the Goodreads Author Program changes this. The program is free and open to any published author with at least one book in the Goodreads database. Once approved, you can update your photograph and bio, manage your book listings, connect your blog, run giveaways, and interact with readers through Goodreads’ Ask the Author feature. Your profile receives an official Author badge, and readers can follow you for updates on future work.

How to Claim Your Profile

Go to goodreads.com and sign in or create a free account. Search for your book by title or ISBN. On the book’s page, click your author name to open the author profile. Scroll to the bottom. Look for the prompt: “Is this you? Let us know!” Click it and follow the steps to submit your application. Goodreads typically approves applications within two business days.

Once approved, add your photograph — the same one appearing on your website and Amazon page. Write your bio in third person, focused on where you write from, what you write, and what connects you to your subject. Add every book you have published with the correct cover, ISBN, and description. Link your website.

If your book is not yet in the Goodreads database, the Goodreads Librarians Group — a community of volunteers — can help you get it listed.

The Search Test

Once your profile is claimed, take the same test from last week’s campaign. Search for yourself on Goodreads the way a reader would. Is your photograph there? Does the bio sound like you? Are all your books listed and correctly attributed? Do the links work? If a reader found this page and nothing else, would they know enough to decide whether to read your book?

Ask your early readers to rate and review the book honestly on Goodreads as well as Amazon. Ratings give the next reader something an author cannot provide: the experience of people who have already read the book.

Robin Barefield started where she was — remote, unknown, powered by a generator. She claimed her profile, listed her books, and kept her presence current. The readers found her because she made herself findable.

Goodreads is where many readers already gather. Your profile is your seat at the table. Claim it. The readers are already there.

If this idea resonates with you, you will find the same philosophy throughout The Power of Authors by Evan and Lois Swensen, where showing up for the reader is the foundation of every practical step.
