Up For Adoption

Elizabeth (not her real name) came into my office clutching a new nine-inch by eleven-inch unsealed white envelope. She had already read Bringing Your Book to Market and was almost ready to put her baby up for adoption.

I knew somewhat of the inner trauma Elizabeth was feeling. She wasn’t the first writer about to become a published author who sat in my office’s red upholstered office chair clutching the results of her long days and nights of writing and rewriting.

Holding the white envelope closer and more tightly, Elizabeth began by asking questions already answered in Bringing Your Book to Market. Her questions were just a stall allowing her confidence to grow and her fears to dissipate from doing what she came to do—give up her baby to a stranger so the baby could grow up into an adult—a typed manuscript to a published book.

Elizabeth glanced at the office wall clock as I asked, “do you have any other questions?”

She could see that her hour’s appointment time was about up.

“No, I guess not.” She handed me the white envelope—and we adopted her baby.
