10 Sled Dog Races in Alaska
Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race
This famous race, held in March, begins in Anchorage for a ceremonial start, and some 10 days later, the winning team enters Nome. Sled dog teams will generally run about 1100 miles to finish.
Yukon Quest
The Yukon Quest is held in February, and is about 1000 miles. It’s especially difficult as it runs between Fairbanks, Alaska, and Whitehorse, Yukon Territory, Canada. Days are shorter in February, and it can be extremely frigid.
Kobuk 440 This race is in April, and starts in Kotzebue Alaska. The field is limited this year to 20 teams. The route will be Kotzebue, Noorvik, Kiana, Ambler, Shungnak, Kobuk, Shungnak, Ambler, Selawik, Noorvik, and back to Kotzebue.
Kuskokwim 300
This race is run on the frozen Kuskokwim River of southwestern Alaska every January. It starts in Bethel and runs 150 miles upriver to Aniak and back. Also known as the Kusko 300.
Copper Basin 300
This race starts in Glennallen, near Canada. Many Iditarod mushers run this to prep for the Iditarod race.
6. Tustumena 200
The Tustumena 200 is held in late January. After a ceremonial start in the city of Kenai, the race begins at Kasilof’s Tustumena Lodge.
7. Junior Iditarod
For mushers under 18, this sled dog race covers part of the Iditarod Trail, from Wasilla to Yentna and back. This two-day event is held just before the Iditarod race.
8. Fur Rendezvous
These are World Championship sled dog races in Alaska, held during a weekend of Anchorage’s 10-day winter fest every February. The sprint races start downtown, head south into the forest and finishes back in downtown.
9. & 10. North American Championships
In February, two weekends in Fairbanks are dedicated to the sprints that comprise the North American Championships, the Limited and the Open.
There are even more sled dog races in Alaska, but we thought you’d like to have an overview of the largest.
Keep in touch.

We hear authors complain about all the personal stuff on Facebook. Most of these complaints are because the author doesn’t understand the difference difference between a Facebook profile and a Facebook page. Simply put, a profile is for personal things for friends and family; a page is for business. If your book is just a hobby, then it’s fine to have only a Facebook profile and make your posts for friends and family; however, if you’re serious about your writing, and it’s a business with you, or you want it to be business, then you need a Facebook page as an author. It’s simple to tell if it’s a page or a profile. A profile shows how many friends and a page shows how many likes. Here’s a link <> to a straight forward description on how to set up your author Facebook page.
