LinkedIn for the Author

Don’t take your book to LinkedIn. Take the ideas making you write it.

Bill Cox never shouts. He does not chase trends or controversy. His voice — steady, thoughtful, and honest — cuts through noise with clarity and conviction. My Pursuit of the Axis of Evil is about people — a lifetime of encounters across Siberia, Southeast Asia, India, and Alaska. He writes from the road, the sky, and the heart.

Bill carries a principle often attributed to Pythagoras: “Check your prejudices at every port of entry.” And he does — again and again, across more than two dozen journeys to parts of the world most Americans glimpse only on the news.

Bill does not need LinkedIn to make his writing valuable. But imagine one observation from one of those journeys — not a book advertisement, just something he learned from sitting across a table from someone Americans normally encounter only as a headline. A professional network gives an author room to share exactly this kind of thinking.

What Conversation Did Your Book Come From?

A leadership book came from years of conversations about leadership. A teacher’s memoir came from conversations about education. A veteran’s book came from conversations about service and sacrifice. Bill’s book came from a lifetime of crossing borders and checking assumptions.

LinkedIn is where many of those professional conversations continue. The platform is not a bookstore. It is a place where professionals share ideas, experience, and perspective. If the conversation producing your book is already happening on LinkedIn, the platform gives you a seat at the table.

Not every book belongs there. Fiction rarely finds its natural audience on LinkedIn, though a novel exploring workplace culture or ethical dilemmas might connect through the ideas it contains. The question is the same one we have asked about every platform: where are your readers, and what do they expect to find?

Ideas, Not Advertisements

A bare “Buy my book” post contributes little to a professional conversation. An idea from the book can contribute a great deal.

The leadership author sharing a lesson learned the hard way. The historian connecting an archival discovery to a current debate. The teacher reflecting on what twenty-five years in a classroom taught her. The traveler describing what happened when a headline became a person.

Somewhere in the author’s profile is the book. For the reader who wants more, it is easy to find. But the post itself contributes something to the conversation — it does not interrupt it.

Setting Up the Profile

Update your LinkedIn headline to include “Author of [Book Title]” alongside your professional identity. This signals the book to every visitor without requiring the author to mention it in every post.

LinkedIn’s profile sections change over time, so check your own profile editing options for where to add publications and featured content. Most profiles allow you to list published works and pin a book link with the cover image visible near the top of the page. These changes take minutes. Once in place, the book is present on every profile visit.

The Voice Worth Following

Bill Cox writes from curiosity rather than self-promotion. LinkedIn gives an author room to do the same: contribute an observation, share something learned, raise a worthwhile question, and let the book sit naturally behind the conversation.

If your book comes from professional experience, if it contains ideas your colleagues and community would find valuable, if your voice is steady and has something to contribute — LinkedIn is a place to share it.

The book announcement is not advertising. It is a professional milestone: “After twenty years working in this field, I finally wrote down what I learned.” The professionals who know your name may be the first audience worth reaching.

If this idea resonates with you, you will find the same philosophy throughout The Power of Authors by Evan and Lois Swensen — a book about why authors write and why what they write matters.

The Power of Authors is available from Amazon or your favorite bookseller: evanswensen.com. If you’d like an autographed copy, visit the same website and order directly.
