One Author, Every Platform

The reader who finds you on Amazon, then looks you up on Instagram, then visits your website should meet the same person every time.

A few years ago, I met an author at a conference in Anchorage. She had a fine book — a memoir about commercial fishing on Kodiak Island. The writing was strong. The cover was right. The book was selling.

Then I looked her up.

On Amazon, her author photo was a formal studio portrait — hair done, dark background. On her website, a snapshot from the dock in rubber boots and rain gear, holding a halibut. On Facebook, no photo at all. On Goodreads, the bio said she was a retired teacher. On Amazon, the bio said she was a lifelong fisherwoman. Both were true. Neither matched the other.

A reader meeting her on one platform would not recognize her on the next. She was three different authors on three different stages.

The Photo, the Name, the Bio

Consistency does not mean posting the same content everywhere. It means the reader recognizes you everywhere.

Start with three things.

The photograph. Choose one professional photo and use it on every platform. The reader who sees your picture on the back of the book should see the same face on Amazon, Goodreads, your website, and your social media profiles. Update the photo when it no longer looks like you. Do not use a different photo for each platform.

The name. Use the same version of your name everywhere. If the book says “Margaret Lyn Wallace,” do not list yourself as “Maggie Wallace” on Facebook and “M.L. Wallace” on Goodreads. The name on the book is the name on every platform. If you write under more than one name, keep them separate — each name gets its own consistent presence.

The bio. Write three versions: one sentence, one paragraph, and one page. The one-sentence version goes where space is tight — social media profiles, podcast introductions, event programs. The paragraph version goes on Amazon, Goodreads, and the back of the book. The full page goes on the website. All three should tell the same story. If the one-sentence version calls you a memoirist, the full page should not call you a novelist.

The Voice the Reader Expects

Beyond the photo and the bio, there is something harder to pin down and more important to get right: the voice.

An author who writes warm, reflective essays on Medium and then posts sharp, combative opinions on social media creates a disconnect. The reader who followed the essayist does not know what to do with the polemicist. Both may be real. But the reader came for one and got the other.

This does not mean you become artificial. It means you decide which version of yourself is the author, and you let the author show up everywhere. The fishing memoirist can post about politics — but the voice the reader trusts is the one they found in the book

The Test

Here is a way to check. Open every platform where your name shows up — Amazon, Goodreads, your website, Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Medium, your email signature. Line them up. Ask three questions.

Would a reader recognize the same person on every platform? Would they find the same name, the same photo, the same basic story? Would the voice feel like the same writer they met in the book?

If the answer is yes, your platforms are working together. If the answer is no, fix the mismatches this week. It takes an afternoon. The return lasts for years.

An author brand is not a logo or a color scheme. It is the reader’s confidence they have found the right person. Consistency builds confidence. Confusion breaks it.

If this idea resonates with you, you will find the same philosophy throughout The Power of Authors by Evan and Lois Swensen — a book about why authors write and why what they write matters.

The Power of Authors is available from Amazon or your favorite bookseller: evanswensen.com. If you’d like an autographed copy, visit the same website and order directly.
