More About ISBN Numbers

All books must have an ISBN number.

It is important for you to have a good ISBN number.

Here’s what ISBN numbers mean using 978-1-888888-00-5, as the example:

978 says it’s a book;

1 shows the book is published in an English-speaking country;

888888 identifies the publisher;

00 is the specific number of each book and tells how many books the publisher has published;

And the last number is a check digit.

For example, if you purchase your own ISBN number and it was 978-1-888888-00-5, booksellers, libraries, and book reviewers would know that you’re a self-published author with one book.

We made the big mistake and purchased ten ISBN numbers when we published our first book. It didn’t take long for us to learn that we had no credibility with booksellers, libraries, and book reviewers.

To correct this we bought 100 numbers. This helped, but it didn’t resolve the entire negative effects of using the really bad numbers.

As soon as we could we acquired 1,000 numbers.

Now, in the eyes of booksellers, libraries, and book reviewers we’re just as big the guys in New York.

You may want to consider purchasing 100 ISBN numbers right from the beginning. It’s a little expensive, but you may find it’s worth it just to overcome the effects of using a bad ISBN number.
