You’ve come to the right place to learn more about the dogs that run the Iditarod race. As you can see by our featured books, we have great books for all ages to take you inside the history and experience of the race.

Many people become interested in the Iditarod race because of the sled dogs. Most children love all animals, and seeing dogs running the Iditarod Trail might be one of the most exciting things they will ever see dogs do. Working hard, and working together as a team. Working with their musher, staying alert for dangers on the trail, and loving to run.

Elim, the Determined Athlete by Joan Jackson is based on the true story of one Alaska village husky adopted by musher Jeff King. This wonderful picture book is told from the point of view of the dog, Elim.

The book has an excellent parent/teacher discussion guide, and a glossary of some mushing terms. There is also a color reproduction of the Anchorage Daily News article about musher Jeff King, and how the four-month-old pup, Elim, was determined to join his team.

For children a bit older, and also from the point of view of the dogs is Where’s the Boss? by Lois Harter. In this story, also based on an actual incident that happened to one of Lois’ own family members: a musher collapses on the trail, and his sled dogs save his life.

We have it on good authority that adults who get these books for the children in their lives read and enjoy them first. And we’re not complaining about that. In fact, we recommend it.

Also, if you’d like any of our books personalized by the author, just let us know. We can usually arrange that for you.

Keep in touch.
