You have a story to tell, but you really can’t write? If you are a person of few words, is the door to publication closed?
Not at all. There are a couple of options. One is to buckle down and learn your craft. Almost everyone who writes gets better at writing.
But what if your strength is drawing? Or painting? Then you have another option, and your graphic arts strength is at the cutting edge of popularity in publishing. Graphic novels are showing increasing sales.
In an article by Dennis Abrams on Publishing Perspectives web site, you will read some welcome statistics:
“This year, the No. 1 and No. 2 selling books in the category, “The Walking Dead” compendiums by Robert Kirkman (Image Comics), have sold a combined 100,000 copies, and, at $59.99 each, the suggested price point is well above that of most soft covers. In fact, The Walking Dead: Compendium One is, by a long shot, the highest-priced book on Nielsen BookScan’s bestseller chart for overall adult fiction top 200 year-to-date 2013.”
It’s a big market. My advice is to study this genre, as you would study any genre. Last year the classic A Wrinkle in Time, by Madeleine L’Engle, was illustrated and adapted by Hope Larson.
First published in 1962, it had never been illustrated. Now that has changed, and millions of readers will enjoy this new take on L’Engle’s book.
So don’t worry if you really can’t write enough to come up with 60,000 words. Sharpen up your pens, and pick out your paintbrushes, and sketch out your graphic novel.
